in my game, since my hero of Ferelden is a mage, Leandra states in Dragon Age 2 that they are related. so I expanded on that, except Maeve and Marlone know that they are cousins, just lost contact after the Blight.

Since Maeve is a Grey Warden and the long time mistress of the King (since mage’s can’t marry Alistair.) she’s very brave and honorable. She has wisdom way beyond her years but isn’t a stick in the mud, she’s not a no non-sense type of girl. She does what she has to do and tries not to let her emotions get in the way, after all, if she did she wouldn’t be a Grey Warden nor would she have defeated the Blight.

Marlone has a very dynamic personality. His passion and intensity make him strong, although he has always had difficulty finding direction in life. He is normally charming, sarcastic and more laid back then Maeve. He has the right balance of humor and maturity but overall he’s just a smartass. He was nicknamed Hawke because of his swift assassination skills by the assassins guild. When he’s working, he focuses only on his target. Though, more often than not, he likes to play with his target and have a little fun. Marlone is a master of torture and tricks as well as a master of witty one liners and comebacks. He enjoys sex with both males and females and is known for trying anything once. Except a thumb up his ass, Isabela tried, it wasn’t as comforting as she tried to make it seem. They are kind of an off-on friends with benefits type of thing.
